Rob Thomas Took His Time To Ensure 'Chip Tooth Smile' Was Just Right

"There was no expectation, which was a really good place to be in."

February 20, 2019

Friend of the 'Big Show' Rob Thomas has officially announced the release of his highly anticipated fourth solo album Chip Tooth Smile which is set to arrive in stores and on streaming services April 26th. His brand new single "One Less Day (Dying Young)" was just released today, February 20th, and to celebrate, Rob dropped by to talk with Scott Shannon and Patty Steele about the exciting news.

Each year for the past God-knows-how-many, Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas has been a big part of Scott Shannon's Blythdale Children's Hospital broadcast, which as you can imagine, is all about the kids that day. So, Scott doesn't get too many chances to sit down to talk with Rob about music. Today, release day for "One Less Day (Dying Young)" turned out to be the perfect chance.

"It's funny, because I spent the whole year just making a record, so it felt like I wasn't doing anything, it was just a no pressure situation," Thomas tells Scott and Patty. "I didn't even let the label know I was starting one until I was halfway through and kind of knew where I was going."

"There was no expectation, which was a really good place to be in. The summer before I had just gone out with Matchbox, no new music, it was just the 20th anniversary tour. Then I was left with (the decision of) I could never make a record again, or take all the time in the world, or put one out in a week. It was up to me so I just waited until I had it right."

Scott wonders if taking your time with a project can be a pitfall, and that's where, Rob says, the support of his peers, including producer Butch Walker, came in.

"When I got about halfway through, that was when I started letting everybody in on it because then they started giving me the pressure to have to wrap it up. I probably wrote 60 or more songs because I did it over a two or so year period. I was just writing all the time."

Patty joked that it sounds like, as a departure from some of his Matchbox Twenty songs, he doesn't have any angst on this album, and Rob agrees.

"Yeah, there's very little angst," Rob laughed. "I mean I'm 47, what am I angsty about anymore? By the way, when you're 47 it's not called angst anymore -- it's called 'reasonable expectations that things are gonna be crappy.' That is not angst, that is called life experience and you're probably right!"

Speaking of life experiences, be sure to watch the full interview above where Rob explains the sweet story he has about his wife, Marisol, behind the album's title.
