Matthew McConaughey is a movie star that just keeps on giving and giving to his fans. I really love his latest Lincoln car commercial where he is playing pool by himself, doing trick shots. Not really sure what the heck is going on but it adds to the myth of this very mindful actor. So, it was only a matter of time before he played a guy that really lives in the moment, a guy by the name of Moon Dog.

The movie is called Beach Bum and it premiered recently at SXSW in Austin, Texas. His hometown, this is where it all began for McConaughey. The story goes that a movie producer met him at the Four Season’s bar and knew immediately he could be a star. He was cast as Wooderson, the older guy who famously couldn’t give up high school, in the classic Dazed and Confused

McConaughey arrived at the Beach Bum red carpet wearing a Lucha Libre-inspired Western shirt and was very chilled out when we chatted about his character Moon Dog. He told me, "The essence of Moondog….ummmmm… he is an epidemic of joy, he’s anarchy, he goes through life……  if something goes his way or doesn’t go his way, he sees it as another note in the song of his life that he is conducting.”

Listening to McConaughey talk is a thing of magic with his ability to weave quite silly things into profound and wonderful statements. As I spoke to him I was still trying to break down the statement “Epidemic of Joy”. I kept thinking it would be a great name for a thrash metal band.

This eloquence in stringing words together to create a soothing listening experience hasn’t been lost on the people behind the mindfulness app, CALM. They hired McConaughey to read a bedtime story called “Wonder” which has been a huge hit in helping people fall asleep. I asked him about the relationship between mindfulness and sleep, where he replied, "Talk about mindfulness if you’re having trouble sleeping it's not the mattress its the mind!"

When I questioned him about all the husbands out there that are putting a stop to their wives falling to sleep listening to a Matthew McConaughey bedtime story he giggled and said, “THAT'S AN EPIDEMIC TOO…..HOT DAMN!!!”   And then he was off to spread his very own epidemic of joy to the next person.

Beach Bum is in theaters now where you can also see McConaughey’s good friend Jimmy Buffett play himself.

Check out my interview with Jimmy Buffett at the premiere, who tells a great Scott Shannon story!
