Slash, Ozzy, Lemmy Reminisce About Legendary Rock and Roll Hangout

'You’d see everybody here'

October 17, 2019

“The history of rock and roll is in here,” Lemmy Kilmister says to begin the trailer for a new documentary about one of the most legendary hangouts in music. The late Motörhead frontman should know, because he had his own bar stool at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood, CA.

“I used to get away with murder in there,” Slash exaggerated as the trailer for “The Rainbow” continues.

“It was exactly how you pictured it – times ten,” onetime Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum added.

“You’d see everybody here,” said Ozzy from one of the restaurant’s dimly-lit booths.

As the documentary synopsis tells it: “Since 1972, nestled near the western end of Hollywood’s famed Sunset Strip sits the Rainbow Bar & Grill. While the world around it has changed dramatically, The Rainbow remains much like it did when it opened its doors. Legendary musicians such as Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, Lita Ford, Gene Simmons, Lemmy Kilmister – in one of his final interviews – and many more recount their stories from the iconic venue. And we meet three-generation owners Mario, Mikael and Mikey Maglieri who have witnessed and dedicated their lives to preserving rock history.”

The Rainbow Bar & Grill is the kind of place where you can smell the history seeping out of the walls and the carpet as soon as you walk through the door. But you don’t even need to go that far to take in the crowd and have a drink. An outdoor bar and seating area was added years ago. Just don’t be surprised to find yourself sitting next to someone you watched on MTV back in the day. That’s where Lemmy sat and played video poker, after all.
