Kirk Hammett, Steven Tyler and More Honor Fleetwood Mac Co-Founder

Watch the all star performances

Before there were Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, there was Peter Green. Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood put together an all-star tribute for the band’s co-founder and the results were spectacular.

Kirk Hammett, Steven Tyler, David Gilmour, Pete Townshend, Billy Gibbons and Noel Gallagher were among those who performed at the concert at the London Palladium on Tuesday. The show benefited Teenage Cancer Trust while shining a spotlight on the sometimes overlooked Green.

The singer-songwriter guitarist wrote and performed on Fleetwood Mac’s first three studio albums, all released in the 1960s. One of his best known compositions was “Black Magic Woman,” which Santana turned into a hit in 1970. Green left Fleetwood Mac that same year amid mental health and drug issues

“The concert is a celebration of those early blues days where we all began, and it’s important to recognize the profound impact Peter and the early Fleetwood Mac had on the world of music,” Fleetwood said in a statement. “Peter was my greatest mentor and it gives me such joy to pay tribute to his incredible talent. I am honored to be sharing the stage with some of the many artists Peter has inspired over the years and who share my great respect for this remarkable musician.”

Green did not appear at the concert, original guitarist Jeremy Spencer and longtime keyboardist Christine McVie performed. The set ended with a rousing rendition of Elmore James’ “Shake Your Moneymaker,” which Fleetwood Mac covered on their 1968 debut.
