The passing of J. Geils has left the music world with a heavy heart, which may be felt more poignantly in the city of Boston and surrounding areas like Worcester, where Geils formed the band bearing his name.

As a member of Boston’s most famous boy band New Kids On The Block, Joey McIntyre is feeling the pangs of loss as well. McIntyre spoke with Scott Shannon about the moments he was able to perform with J. Geils.

“I did get to sing with him,” McIntyre recalls of the time he performed at The Esplanade in Boston. “It was a solo concert for me and I asked him to come and sing.”

McIntyre also shared the stage with Geils during the Boston Strong concert following the marathon bombings in 2013.

“All the acts were on the stage and, this guy, man, he’s flyin’ around… takin’ the mic away from Steven Tyler. It was hilarious. He’s a character,” says McIntyre.
