One of the greats, Yogi Berra, is celebrating his 90th birthday today. He is widely considered by many to be one of the greatest catchers in Major League Baseball history, in addition to being one of the best ballplayers to ever put on the pinstripes.
Berra spent 19 seasons with the New York Yankees, earning three MVP awards and appearing in 15 All-Star games. To the surprise of some of today’s baseball fans, he holds the record for most World Series games played; his 75 appearances in the Fall Classic nearly DOUBLE that of Derek Jeter’s 38 World Series games played.
Oh, he also owns the record for most World Series home runs with 12. Chew on that, Reggie!
Possibly more so than his play on the field, Yogi Berra is known for his “Yogi-isms”; his witty rhetoric known to turn heads and garner laughs. Here are nine of his best.
“It ain’t over till it’s over.”
“Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical.”
“Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”
