Kong: Skull Island debuted at #1 at the box office last weekend, raking in $61 million and $72.8 million over its first five days. Part of that success is due to John C. Reilly’s role as soldier Hank Marlow and his scene-making one-liners. Reilly was on the CBS-FM Star Phone with Scott Shannon this morning.

“We went all over the world,” says Reilly. “The cool thing about the way we made the movie was we did it the old fashioned way; we go to places that look like Skull Island… we went first to Hawaii, then to Australia, and then to Vietnam.”

Of course, a big budget movie whose main antagonist is a colossal gorilla, some special effects are necessary. “They do the CGI stuff on top of that,” adds Reilly.
