Neil Young turned 71 on Saturday and celebrated by protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. The demonstrations have captured the nation’s attention and inspired a legion of (recently disaffected) progressive Millennials to rally behind an urgent cause — a perfect place for a folk icon to join the fray.

The controversial energy infrastructure project strikes at the heart of environmental issues and preserving local Native American lands.

“Got my birthday wish today, my girl took me to #StandWithStandingRock,” Young wrote in a Facebook post. He shared footage from his visit to protesters, at which he sang “Indian Giver.” The songwriter’s girlfriend Daryl Hannah, an activist in her own right, shared the same clips on Instagram.
