Deb Gordon’s guest was philanthropist Laurie M. Tisch, Founder and President of the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, which supports innovative strategies to address long standing problems in New York and works to provide access and opportunity to all New Yorkers.

“I have two daughters…they were lucky, they were exposed to great museums…culture…healthy food – but as we all know not every child in the city is — as a matter of fact, many are not,” said Tisch. “The way that I Iooked at access and opportunity was ‘where can we at the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund jump in to level the playing field’.”

The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund champions and supports inventive approaches to many issues, but places a special emphasis on arts education and healthy eating and Ms. Tisch discussed a few of the many programs that the organization funds and partners with including The New York City Green Cart Program, and The Children’s Museum of Manhattan.

Through Laurie’s daughters, the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund has invested in and provides grants to The New York Women’s Foundation, especially concerning the issue of working women and childcare.

“I’m a huge fan of the New York Women’s Foundation, the work that they do as you know, is so vitally important,” said Tisch.

On Thursday, October 13th, Ms. Tisch will be honored by the New York Women’s Foundation for her ongoing commitment to empowering others.  The New York Women’s Foundation, led by Ana Oliveira, is a cross cultural alliance devoted to economic justice for women and girls, and Ms. Tisch expressed gratitude for the honor and shared its special meaning.

“I have known Ana for probably close to twenty years…and I have the utmost respect for her” said Tisch. “So, to receive an award from her is in itself a great honor.”

“It’s such an impressive organization, their breadth, their reach, their staff, their board… The New York Women’s Foundation is in the trenches and they just do spectacular work, and save and enhance so many lives across the five boroughs.”

The New York Women’s Foundation Gala will also recognize and honor Saru Jayaraman, Co-Founder & Co-Director of Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, and Dina Habib Powell, Head of Goldman Sachs’ Impact Investing Business and President of The Goldman Sachs Foundation.

The Gala will be held at the Plaza Hotel and will feature a special performance by Molly Jobe from the hit Broadway musical, Waitress.  The inimitable U.S. Senator Cory Booker will also be in attendance to introduce Ms. Tisch.

“I am so honored again, not only that he will be there, but that he is taking the time out of his incredibly busy schedule,” said Tisch.

All proceeds from the Gala will go towards supporting the New York Women’s Foundation’s mission. For more information, visit
