Deb Gordon’s guest was Joseph Peri, President of Junior Achievement of New York (JANY), which is a non profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and entrepreneurship.

Mr. Peri expanded on the organization’s goals to inspire young people to become successful, and outlined their unique curriculum for kids in grade K-12, which is delivered by community volunteers from all walks of life, who teach business life-skills and financial literacy to New York City students.

“Our goal is really to work with our partner schools in a very intensive way so that the kids are getting really substantive experiences and knowledge, and also getting it year after year, so they’re really building a portfolio of knowledge and experiences that will serve them as they get older,” said Peri.

“At the high school level we have specialized programs like a business plan competition…it’s kind of like a shark tank experience for the kids to develop their business plans and pitch them to real entrepreneurs in the business world.”

Spotlighted JA New York’s annual Leadership Awards Gala on Tuesday, November 15th, their signature fundraising event, where they honor community members who have supported the organization, and also award a Junior Achievement Student of the Year with a $10,000 scholarship.

Mr. Peri also discussed other opportunities for the community to get involved, such as by volunteering to become a mentor to a young person, or by hosting a JA New York student at their place of business as part of the job shadow program.
