Hey guys, Joe Causi here with another week in music history…

From Beatlemania to “Bohemian Rhapsody” to Sonny Bono’s foray into politics and Jimmy Buffett’s foray into the sea — plus much more!

Talk about some amazing moments — here we go!

The ’60s

Let’s head back to summer of 1966 when teenagers Carol Hopkins and Susan Richmond climbed out onto the ledge on the second floor of a hotel right here in the city and threatened to jump unless they could get to meet The Beatles.

Police eventually talked then down.

Wow! Talk about BEATLEMANIA!

The ’70s

It would be this week in 1975 when Queen started recording their legendary masterpiece ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ at Rockfield studios in Wales — which took over three weeks to record.

Freddie Mercury had mentally prepared the song beforehand and directed the band throughout the sessions. May, Mercury, and Taylor sang their vocal parts continually for ten to twelve hours a day, resulting in 180 separate overdubs.

In one word…INCREDIBLE!

The ’80s

It happened back this week in 1987 when Sonny Bono, who once said that he never voted until he was 53, announced that he was running for mayor of Palm Springs, California!

He won the election in 1988 and went on to win a seat in Congress in 1996.

The ’90s

And to all you PARROTHEADS… It would be this week in 1994 when Jimmy Buffett crashed his Grumman G-44 seaplane on take-off in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

Buffett swam away from the wreckage with his guitar and a lost shaker of salt!

The 2000’s

It would be this week in 2004, when singer Laura Branigan died of a brain aneurysm. She had had a number 2 hit in the U.S. in 1982 with “Gloria” and a number 4 hit in the U.S. “Self Control”.

Besides being a good friend, I became the first radio personality to play “Gloria” anywhere in the USA!
