“On the cover here, I’m walking towards my future and it looks bright to me,” Graham Nash remarks, looking at the cover of his new album, This Path Tonight. “I know I’m walking through a snow storm, but that’s the way life is sometimes, isn’t it?”

Nash’s sixth solo studio album is his first in 14 years and it could not have come at a more fitting time.

“My personal life is a little chaotic right now,” says Nash, still reeling from the recent end of a 38-year marriage. Nash proves that at the age of 74, with many of life’s lessons already laid out in front of him, that speed bumps and road blocks still await. “And in the meantime, I fell in love with this beautiful New York lady artist here in New York City who set me back on fire.”

The combination of heartbreak and new love have led to This Path Tonight‘s inspiration and unearthing of Nash’s latest muse. “These songs are just my emotional journey that I’m going through in my life and… as a songwriter, I think there are probably a lot of people going through the same thing and this is how I’m dealing with it and maybe could be helpful to people.”

As Graham Nash has said time and again, finding a muse is a simple task, a point reiterated during his conversation with 1010 WINS anchor Brigitte Quinn.

5 Things You Didn’t Know: ‘Our House’ by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

“I don’t know any musician that knows when the muse of music is going to come visit, so you have to be open all the time. Sometimes songs come from the most ordinary places,” Nash says, recalling the catalyst for one of his most well-known songs, “Our House,” former girlfriend Joni Mitchell.

“It was an incredibly ordinary moment between two people that were deeply in love with each other,” says Nash of the song, which was inspired by the simple task of Mitchell buying a vase after breakfast one morning before returning to her Los Angeles home. As the story (and song) goes, Nash lit a fire while Mitchell picked some flowers. “The one thing about it that was so great is that because she had to go outside to get some flowers for the vase, she wasn’t at her piano, which meant, of course, that I was. And ‘Our House’ was written within an hour and a half of that moment.”

In that same interview, Nash discusses the potential disaster that is a Presidency run by either Donald Trump or Ted Cruz.

This Path Tonight is available now. Graham Nash will perform at The Town Hall in New York City on May 14th. Tickets are available here.
