Chicago‘s long-awaited induction into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame finally arrives during the 31st Annual ceremony on April 8th. It’s a long time coming for the band, which spent 22 years sitting and waiting at the museum’s doorstep.

Chicago’s exclusion for more than two decades was a source of controversy for the Rock Hall, who considered the band to be more of a pop act than a rock and roll band. Even with their induction on the horizon, Chicago couldn’t avoid dissension among the ranks of former and current members, notably from original member Peter Cetera.

In short, there was debate between Cetera, current band members, and management regarding the former’s willingness to join the band he helped create and find success take the next step in their storied career.

While on the CBS-FM Star Phone with Scott Shannon, another founding member, Robert Lamm, extended an olive branch to his former bandmate.

“I’d be very surprised if he showed up,” begins Lamm before continuing, “if he does, he’s welcome to sing whatever part he wants to sing.”

“Except not in his key,” Lamm adds with a laugh.

Cetera’s decision and reasoning for flip-flopping between joining and declining the opportunity to unite with his former band has mirrored his erratic decision-making regarding his willingness to join Chicago, or even entertain discussions, for a reunion. But the opportunity is there for Cetera during this once-in-a-lifetime moment (twice, if you’re lucky) of recognition.
