"It's going to be a fun voyage."

By Jeff Cornell

Jimmy Buffett fans will now be able to enjoy “Margaritaville” on the stage, as a musical “featuring the music and lifestyle” of the singer and songwriter is in the works. The show is being produced by Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley and will be directed by Christopher Ashley, who also oversaw the Broadway shows Memphis and Hands on a Hardbody.

According to Billboard, Buffett released the following statement: “The idea of turning Margaritaville into a musical has been percolating for quite a while, but finding the right people to tell the right kind of story to go with the right songs from my catalog took some time. Now we have found our crew and I am happy to sail with them to Margaritaville. It’s going to be a fun voyage.”

According to USA Today, Garcia stated that he and O’Malley, both “lifelong Buffett fans,” had “jumped at the opportunity to work together on this project.” He added, “Buffett’s music means so much to so many people. It’s a lifestyle. A way of looking at the world. We hope to tap into what Jimmy has created and help bring that fun to the stage.”

The show, which will surely feature many nods to his loyal “Parrottheads” and his best-known songs including ”Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” is expected to premiere in 2017.
