Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the second installment of the re-booted movie franchise. It doesn’t look like it is leaving the spotlight anytime soon, having earned a staggering $70 million in its opening weekend. People just seem to love these cuddly gorillas.

In the film, Cesar, played by Andy Serkis, is the boss of the apes and he can now talk to the humans. Meanwhile the rest of his ape buddies have learned to shoot machine guns in preparation for a looming war. Who wouldn’t love this?

The film is actually fantastic, but how they make these apes look real is even more impressive when you hear it is really just a bunch of guys running around in unitards with cables attached to them.

Actress Keri Russell, who burst onto our televisions 14 years ago as Felicity, plays a doctor in the movie series. I caught up with her in Brooklyn on the red carpet to discuss the Apes and the talented guys that play them.

“The good thing, as crazy as it sounds, they are actually so good that Andy [Serkis] just goes for it,” Keri said. “So to do all those characters you have to be that quality of an actor and he is.”

Also in the interview, we talk about Keri’s FX show The Americans, in which she plays a gun toting Russian Spy living in early 80s Washington DC. It is one of the greatest shows on television.

“I think our creators are so weird and cool and it’s so fun, I love working on the show,” Keri said.
