Mark McGrath, lead singer of chart-topping band Sugar Ray, is making the jump from singer to movie star, taking a role in Syfy’s upcoming TV movie Sharknado 2: The Second One. Calling in to CBS-FM’s ‘Star Phone,’ McGrath tells Scott Shannon all about his new gig as well as his upcoming Under the Sun tour, featuring hit 1990s bands.

“Its so bad that its good,” McGrath says, showing us that he’s in on the joke. “I watched that movie like everybody else did and then I got the call a couple months ago ‘Wanna come to New York City and film Sharknado 2?’ and I go ‘Where do I sign up?’”

And McGrath promises that the next iteration is sure to be a hit. “The cameos they got, Robert Klein, Richard Kind, Biz Markie, Perez Hilton, Kelly Osbourne, the list goes on and on. People were clamoring to get in the sequel . . . I found myself in the middle of Broadway with Judd Hirsch, an Academy Award nominee, driving the taxi and I’m throwing dialogue back and forth.”

Next on his agenda is his upcoming festival, the “Under the Sun” tour which he put together to honor the hits of the 1990s. “Basically we celebrate the great music of the nineties that we all love,” says Mark. “If you love number one songs from the nineties, please come out to the show. It’s a lot of fun.”

Fans of McGrath wondering whether his character will meet an untimely demise in Sharknado 2: The Second One will just have to wait until it premieres July 30th at 9pm on Syfy. And fans of Sugar Ray can catch them perform on the Under the Sun tour, along with Uncle Kracker, Blues Traveler and Smash Mouth, July 25th at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park and at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City July 26th.

Tickets are available at LiveNation.
