Lea Michele, star of the hit television series Glee, got her start in the business at the age of eight when she was first discovered at an open casting call for Les Miserables. She stopped by WCBS FM to talk with Scott Shannon and Patty Steele to promote her new single “On My Way” and give us some insight into her career in showbiz.
Born in the Bronx and raised in Tenafly, NJ, Lea says she is described by her mother as “a combination of Natalie Wood and Jim Carrey.” She was admittedly a “wacky” kid who decided to tag along to her friend’s audition at an open call for a major Broadway production, just for for fun. Having no experience performing or singing,
Lea’s parents had no idea about her true potential. “You can’t sing, what do you mean?,” Lea remembers them saying. But she went ahead anyway and nailed the audition – a decision she is “so thankful” for to this day.
From that point it’s been non-stop working for Lea, doing back-to-back Broadway shows up until the age of 23.
Still, Lea maintained a normal life, graduating from High School with honors and even went to her prom. She credits her normalcy to her “wonderful” parents who allowed her to continue her career at her choice.
“They never made it what they wanted me to do it was always what I wanted to do, says Lea. “And that’s the healthiest way to proceed in this business.”
Lea Michele is currently blitzing the charts with her second single off of her debut album “Louder.” Watch the steamy video for “On My Way” below.
