Phillip Phillips would be the first to tell you winning American Idol Season 11 was an unlikely scenario. The Albany, Georgia native never considered trying out; Phillips had never even watched the long-running singing competition. It was at the behest that he gave it a shot.
As luck would have it, Phillips won the competition and released his debut album — The World from the Side of the Moon — several months later on November 19, 2012. Phillips has now released his second album, Behind the Light, and believes it is closer to the music he made before reality show stardom took over.
“It has so much personality, so much maturity, and so much growth from the first album,” says Phillips, whose first single from Behind the Light — “Raging Fire” — received critical acclaim and shot to #8 on the US Adult Top 40. “It sounds more like a band record… I don’t like being the center of attention.”
Phillips will be performing with O.A.R. at Jones Beach on July 11 and at PNC Bank Arts Center on July 12. Tickets are available at livenation.com.
