Closing In On 80 Years Of Age, There Is Still No Stopping Frankie Valli

Approaching 80 years of age, over six decades of recording and performing, and Frankie Valli doesn’t appear close to hanging it up. The Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Famer called up Scott Shannon in the Morning to discuss his tireless touring, continued enjoyment of live shows, and the ongoing success of Jersey Boys.

“It is pretty accurate,” remarked Valli, referring to this point in his career as being the busiest. “I just got back from Asia. And I’m on the road right now. And then I’m in Florida.”

Valli has around 50 shows scheduled for 2014, many landing in the Tri-state area in the coming months: the Borgata in Atlantic City on April 11th and 12th; three dates at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury from April 24th-26th; and the State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ on May 17th.

The number of memorable songs released by Valli are numerous: he’s scored 38 Top 40 hits and seven number ones. Fans remember those, as they tend to be the most popular during his live performances.

“There are so many. I mean… it really is amazing,” said Valli. “Songs like ‘Who Loves You’; ‘December, 1963.'”

Valli also involves storytelling in his performances these days, adding an extra twist to shows that couldn’t be included before.

“It’s more fun now,” added Valli. “When we were having the hits in the beginning, nobody really did any of that… people want to know those things.”

Despite his success in the past, Valli had no idea Jersey Boys would find the success it has seen. With music by the famed Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe, the show is in its ninth year, now being performed in several cities across the globe.

“It’s phenomenal,” remarked Valli. “I really believed in this project from the very beginning but I had no idea it would be as big as it is.”
