New Jersey native and former star of The Sopranos, James Gandolfini, reportedly passed away in Italy yesterday from a heart attack at the age of 51. Gandolfini appeared in critically acclaimed films like Zero Dark Thirty, True Romance, and Get Shorty, but his role as troubled crime boss and family man Tony Soprano made him a household name, especially those in the tri-state area and New Jersey who could recognize locations from their own neighborhoods.

The music that accompanied The Sopranos became as important as the characters and their storylines. The music ranged from — at the time — mainstream contemporary (Cake and Xzibit) to oldies and classic rock (The Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys).

Some of the best music was saved for the end credits, serving as an exclamation point for each episode. Here are some of the best songs used on The Sopranos.
