As Yoko Ono supposedly broke up the Beatles, Paul McCartney has done the same to the MTA Board. While that obviously exaggerates the situation, it is still true. Nancy Shevell resigned from her position on the board after ten years on the job this past January, following her marriage to Sir Paul McCartney several months earlier in October.
Filling the void will be former New York governor David Paterson, who is being appointed by his successor, Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“I can’t say I really ever imagined this would happen, but this governor has asked, and I’m honored,” Paterson told the Daily News. “It will be quite exciting.”
Patterson assumed the role of governor when Eliot Spitzer resigned after being named in a sex scandal. His stint as governor from 2008 to 2010 was quite memorable, and not in the most flattering sense of the word.
After being sworn into office, Patterson admitted that he, and his wife, took part in extramarital affairs for several years. He was also investigated for his involvement in a domestic abuse case pertaining to one of his aides and fined $62,000 for accepting tickets to Game 1 of the Yankees/Phillies World Series in 2009.
Despite his checkered past, Governor Cuomo believes Patterson will be a valuable asset to the board and the city of New York.
“Gov. Paterson’s energy, expertise, and experience will benefit the millions of New Yorkers who rely on the MTA every day,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement. “I look forward to working together as we continue to reform the MTA and improve service for New Yorkers.”
Since leaving his position as governor of New York, Patterson has occupied his time by hosting a daily talk-radio show on WOR-AM and teaching a college class. There’s no telling if Patterson’s new, and unpaid, role as member of the MTA Board will have him leaving one of those positions behind.
