[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul McCartney[/lastfm] needs to make some room on that already overcrowded mantel of his, because another prestigious award is coming his way.
Macca has been named the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the same organization that distributes the GRAMMY Awards (which Sir Paul has fourteen of). The award recognizes musicians for their artistic achievement in the music industry and dedication to philanthropy.
UltimateClassicRock.com reports that Sir Paul will be honored at a concert and award ceremony on February 12th, two days before the 54th GRAMMY Awards. It will cap off an exciting couple of months for McCartney, who played several sold out stadium shows this past summer and is getting married this weekend.
“Paul McCartney exemplifies the phrase ‘artist/philanthropist,’ and his extraordinary career is certainly a testament to the multifaceted power of his creative genius,” says GRAMMY President Neil Portnow. “The unique talent, dedication and spontaneity he brings to his projects and live performances are unsurpassed, but are equaled by the impressive generosity and commitment he consistently devotes to a range of important charitable causes.”
The inaugural MusiCares Person of the Year award was given out in 1991 to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]David Crosby[/lastfm], and recent winners include [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Barbra Streisand[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Young[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Diamond[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Aretha Franklin[/lastfm].
