After the success of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul McCartney[/lastfm] wanted to create a film based upon The Beatles and their music. The film was to be unscripted, with various “ordinary” people traveling on a coach and having unspecified “magical” adventures. The film was released in November of 1967 and was aired in the United Kingdom as a made-for-television film on BBC1. The reception was extremely critical, and considered a disaster.

Beatles biographer Hunter Davies said, “It was the first time in memory that an artist felt obliged to make a public apology for his work.” Paul McCartney was a bit easier on the Fab Four. “We don’t say it was a good film. It was our first attempt. If we goofed, then we goofed. It was a challenge and it didn’t come off. We’ll know better next time.”

Sir Paul went on to say, “I mean, you couldn’t call the Queen’s speech a gas, either, could you?”

The soundtrack, obviously, did not receive the same reaction. It was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for best album in 1968 and reached number one in the US where it stayed for eight weeks.
