papawasarollingstonecover Catch The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards and TAVARES at Saturday in the Park[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Temptations[/lastfm] released “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” on September 28, 1972 featuring lead vocals from Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin, Richard Street and Damon Harris. The song was written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, and was originally recorded by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Undisputed Truth[/lastfm] a year earlier, but only found moderate success.

There was a lot of friction in the studio during recording of the track. Allegedly, Edwards didn’t want to sing a verse of the song because it reminded him of his father’s death.

“It was the third of September/That day I’ll always remember/’cause that was the day/that my daddy died.”

Supposedly, Edwards’ father had died on September 3rd, but the truth is that he passed on October 3rd.

It’s also said that Whitfield infuriated Edwards by forcing him to re-record his verses dozens of times until he finally got the angered, bitter grumble he desired out of the usually fiery-toned Edwards. Though his tactics worked, it eventually led to the group firing him as their producer.
