Now that CBS-FM’s A to Zzz’s Countdown is rolling, I can’t believe how many listeners have asked me “Hey, Bob…wasn’t there a hit song that had ALL the letters of the alphabet in it?.”  Well, actually, there was… but we have to go back to the pre-rock & roll days to find it.

a youre adorable Behind The Hits: A to Z in One SongThe tune is called  ”A – You’re Adorable (The Alphabet Song)”  from 1948. Can you believe it took three guys to write this?   They were Sid Lippman, Buddy Kaye and Fred Wise.

Sid was a New Jersey native who wrote the music. Buddy later co-wrote the theme for TV’s I Dream of Jeannie, while Fred went on to write some songs for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elvis Presley[/lastfm] movies… so there is a rock & roll connection after all.

The catchy ditty became a Number One hit in 1949 in a version by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Perry Como[/lastfm] with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Fontane Sisters[/lastfm].

What I think is interesting is that, in the song, the letter “U” stands for the word “you,”  just like in modern song titles and texting. These guys were way, WAY ahead of their time!

Since it’s about letters of the alphabet, the tune was bound to show up on Sesame Street. It did, in 1969.  If you know the song, sing along with the late Jim Henson!
