Stevie Wonder Honored at the Apollo

Stevie Wonder was inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame last night in a star-studded event.  Stars from the world of hip-hop, jazz, pop and gospel music attended.  The event was hosted by the comedian [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sinbad[/lastfm] and raised over a million dollars to preserve and subsidize the Apollo theater, long considered the cradle of black entertainment.

“I thank God for love and I thank God for song,”  Wonder said Monday during  his acceptance speech after singing a short duet of his well-known song “For  Once in My Life” with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tony Bennett[/lastfm].

The stars in attendance at the event, that also serves as a fundraiser for the Harlem theater, included Robert De Niro, Spike  Lee, Phylicia Rashad, Gabourey Sidibe, Rev. Al Sharpton, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Wyclef Jean[/lastfm], Sherri  Shepherd, and host Sinbad.

Attendees said [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm]’s music provided a soundtrack for the nation and even inspired social change.

“What took ’em so long?” director Spike Lee said about Wonder’s induction. “A  lot of time we wait until people are dead. Let’s honor the greats while they’re  still alive and can enjoy it.”

Wonder’s fellow Motown singer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Martha Reeves[/lastfm] agreed.

    he is a great man, I love stevie wonder, favorite is I just called to say I love you!!! He had so many, but tha thas always been my favorite. Congrats to Stevie!!!
