88445655 Lenny Blochs Favorite Memories of Bob Dylan

Being that it is Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday, I’m reminded of some of my fondest memories of the man. From concerts, moments backstage, and his music, here are my favorite Dylan moments.

Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden in 1992 was my favorite concert of all time. One of my broadcasting idols, Scott Muni, opened the show by bringing on [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Mellecamp[/lastfm]. Backed by Saturday Night Live‘s G.E. Smith, along with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Booker T and the MG’s[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Steve Cropper[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Duck Dunn[/lastfm], the acts had world class musicians behind them. The Band doing “When I Paint My Masterpiece”, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]George Harrison[/lastfm] doing “Absolutely Sweet Marie”, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sinead O’Conner[/lastfm] getting booed off stage for her recent “tearing up of the picture of The Pope routine” on SNL.

Other performers included [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Roger McGuinn[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The O’Jay’s[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kris Kristofferson[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Richie Havens[/lastfm]. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm] brought tears to my eyes with “Blowin’ In The Wind”, and finally Bob and friends with “My Back Pages”. Yes, I was so much older than, I’m younger than that now. Thanks for the wonderful show and happy birthday, Bob

Bob Dylan never leaves the road. Most of the time he is always in “on tour” mode. Of the many times I’ve seen him, one memorable backstage event happened at William Paterson College in Wayne, New Jersey. We were backstage with assorted radio folks in a “B” level room. The promoter walked in with a huge box of overnight mail and packages addressed to Bob. To our amazement, he promptly dumped the entire contents into a huge dumpster. “Happens every night”, he said. The packages included the usual assortment of marriage proposals, song lyrics, insanity clauses, etc.

I listen to his music in some form everyday. I believe “Tangled Up In Blue” is his premier recording. The lyrics stemmed from the breakup of his wife and family. They are his most poignant, heartfelt, and personal. When an artist allows you into that dimension of their life, it opens up a side you may have never known.

Bob Dylan “If You See Her Say Hello”

We had a falling-out, like lovers often will
And to think of how she left that night, it still brings me a chill
And though our separation, it pierced me to the heart
She still lives inside of me, we’ve never been apart

Lenny – I have seen Bob Dylan in concert, but the concert you were at sounds so incredible. I grew up with Bob Dylan, and he will always be a legend in his time. I did see Bob Dylan and Joan Baez in a concert for Hurricane Carter.

if you watch the 3oth annviersary video and watch the O’Jays doing “Emotionally Yours” you see an unknown at the time backup singer named Sheryl Crow.

yes yes yes. so many shows. you remided me of the Night of the Hurricane II at the Astrodome in Houston. McGuinn, Stills and Santana wailed on Watchtower. I saw him do a Barbara Allen w/ GE Smith. Once in OKC during Rolling Thunder he actually asked for requests, someone said Watchin the River Flow and he played it. Saw him two nights in a row on the Jesus Tour in a small place. College Gymnasiums, Mountainsides, Roadhouses, Bob don’t care. Happy Bday.
