In 1963, LittleStevie Wonder’s “Fingertips, Part 2” became the first live single to go to number one on the charts.
In 1968, The Jeff Beck Group, with Rod Stewart as lead singer, made their U-S debut at New York’s Fillmore. Stewart got such a bad case of stage fright, he spent the entirety of the first song behind a large speaker cabinet.
In 1969, Super-group Blind Faith released their self-titled album.
In 1969, Judy Garland died.
In 1975, At New York’s Madison Square Garden, Eric Clapton joined The Rolling Stones onstage to jam on “Sympathy for the Devil.”
In 1981, Mark David Chapman pleaded guilty to the murder of John Lennon. He was sentenced to 20 years in jail.
In 1990, Billy Joel performed at Yankee Stadium in New York, becoming the first musician to perform a concert at “The House that Ruth Built.”
In 1991, Jimi Hendrix’s handwritten lyrics to “Room Full of Mirrors” sold for 35-hundred dollars at a New York auction.
In 1992, Tom Jones was joined during his performance at London’s Town & Country Club by Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour on guitar.
In 1993, Ozzy Osbourne changed his mind about retirement and said he would reunite with Black Sabbath for a tour.
In 1995, R.E.M. performed “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” with Dan Rather at a sound check in New York. The song was inspired by the words a mugger shouted at Rather years earlier.
In 1998, In London, a memorial service was held for Linda McCartney.  Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr all attended.
In 2002, U2’s The Edge married his longtime girlfriend Morleigh Steinberg in the South of France. In attendance were Lenny Kravitz, Michael Stipe and the other members of U2.
